Does a Vehicle Lift Need Load Testing in the UK?
A vehicle lift does not automatically need a load test at every thorough examination. Learn how testing, examination and servicing differ, and who decides what is required.
Do Vehicle Lifts Need Load Testing Every 6 Months?
Does your vehicle lift really need a load test every time its LOLER examination is due? The short answer is no. There's often confusion around vehicle lift servicing, LOLER thorough examinations and load testing. They're different activities, and understanding the distinction could save your workshop unnecessary costs.
Is Load Testing a Legal Requirement?
Under the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998 (LOLER), vehicle lifts must be thoroughly examined at appropriate intervals. The HSE recommends six-monthly thorough examinations for vehicle lifts used in motor vehicle repair. However, a load test is not automatically required at every examination. According to HSE guidance, most lifting equipment does not require routine load testing as part of every thorough examination. The decision should be made by a competent person, considering the equipment's condition, history and manufacturer's instructions.
When Does a Vehicle Lift Need Load Testing?
Testing may be necessary in circumstances such as:
- New installations: Installed vehicle lifts require appropriate examination and testing before use.
- Relocation: A lift that has been dismantled and reinstalled.
- Major repairs: Following structural or safety-critical modifications.
- Damage or overloading: Where the lift's integrity may have been compromised.
- Unknown history: Where further testing is considered necessary by a competent person. Not every situation automatically requires the same type of test.
Servicing vs LOLER vs Load Testing
Servicing - Maintains the lift in safe working condition. LOLER Thorough Examination - Identifies defects that could affect safe operation. Load Testing - Assesses performance under a controlled load when required.
These activities serve different purposes and should not be confused. The relevant industry standard, BS 7980:2024, provides guidance on vehicle lift installation, maintenance, examination and safe use.
Don't Pay for Testing You Don't Need
A routine LOLER examination doesn't automatically mean your lift needs load testing. Equally, when testing is necessary, it needs to be carried out correctly and supported by appropriate documentation. The important thing is understanding what your lift actually requires, rather than simply purchasing another certificate. Need Help Arranging Vehicle Lift Servicing, LOLER or Load Testing?
